I was trying to think of a focused, articulate pitch about Freeform’s Cruel Summer that I could write on CBR and I came to the conclusion that my thoughts are just too emotional and weird. Here go those thoughts.
Oh but first. Spoilers, and I’d actually recommend not reading this until you watch because the way the twists unfold is really fascinating.
Cruel Summer is a show set in the 90s, which was great for making us feel old, and telling the story of a teenage girl who was kidnapped and what the aftermath of that was. We saw it advertised on Hulu and, I’ll be honest, we mostly watched it because said teenage girl, Kate, was played by Olivia Holt, aka Cloak and Dagger‘s Tandy. This meant that we spent a fair amount of the show asking ourselves if we were biased toward Kate because we are protective of Olivia Holt because we are protective of Tandy, but ultimately…
